National Hot Dog
Month!
Happy Camper Blog
It’s Time to Get Fired Up about National Hot
Dog Month!
What would camping trips be without that long-time favorite, the
hot dog? July is National Hot Dog Month, and even though there are varying
stories about who created this campground staple, we do know that they were
once known as “dachshund sausages” or “little dog sausages” before they were
simply called hot dogs. And while there’s certainly nothing wrong with
throwing some of them on the grill or roasting them over the campfire before
adding your favorite condiments, we found a few more creative recipes for you
to try to celebrate National Hot Dog Month:
For this version, skip the traditional ketchup, mustard and relish
and add onions, cheese, barbecue sauce and crumbled, cooked bacon to your
dogs, instead. What’s not to love about that?
Spider Dogs
If you want to get your kids’ attention, tell them they’ll be
having spiders for lunch or dinner. They’ll even have fun helping you make
them. To make Spider Dogs, cut the ends of each hot dog into quarters,
leaving about two inches in the middle uncut. Insert a stick or roasting fork
into the uncut section of the hot dogs and roast them over the grill or
campfire. As the hot dogs cook, the spider’s “legs” will “magically” curl up,
to the delight of your kids.
Campfire Crescent
Dogs
This is another favorite recipe and it’s easy to make. Simply open
a tube of refrigerated crescent rolls and separate the dough into triangles
along the perforations. Place a hot dog on the wide end of each triangle and
roll it up, pinching the dough at the end to keep it securely wrapped. Place
each Crescent Dog on a stick and roast it over the fire (but not too close)
until it’s a nice golden brown. Serve with your favorite condiments for
dipping.
Hot Dog Breakfast
Hash
This filling breakfast starts the day off right by including some
veggies. You can even top it off with a few fried eggs for added protein.
Here are the basic ingredients:
5 hot dogs, diced
1 bell pepper, chopped
2 red potatoes cut into small chunks1 sweet potato cut into small
chunks1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Put the olive oil in a cast iron pan and place it on your camp
stove or over the fire. Add the bell pepper, onions and potatoes along with
the garlic and chili powder. Let this mixture cook for five minutes, and then
add in the hot dogs, cooking them until they’re done and everything is
caramelized. Add salt and pepper to taste, and serve with hot sauce if
desired.
Pizza Dogs
If your family loves all things related to pizza, simply change
up your condiments the next time you make hot dogs. Add marinara or pizza
sauce, cheese, pepperoni or your other favorite pizza toppings to your
campfire-roasted dogs and enjoy!
Hot Dog Soup
Here’s an easy recipe that’s nice and hearty, especially when you
serve it with your favorite bread:
1 16-oz. package of hot dogs, sliced
1 15-oz. can of whole kernel corn, drained
1 6-oz. can of tomato paste
1 tablespoon chili powder (or to taste)
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
Pinch of black pepper
2 cups water
1 cup shredded cheese
Combine all ingredients in a pan and cook over medium heat until
the hot dogs are done and the cheese is melted.
