5 Fun and Quirky Roadside Attractions Across the U.S.

One of the best things about heading out on a camping road trip is
having the chance to see new and interesting sights. And sometimes, the more
fun and/or quirky they are, the better! Here are five unique attractions to
consider along with places to camp nearby:

    1. Field of Dreams Movie Site
    |
    Dyersville,
    Iowa

Fans of the 1989 Academy Award-nominated movie will likely
remember the lines, “Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa.” and “If you build it, he
will come.” Visitors can see the field where the movie was filmed free of
charge during daylight hours and tickets are available for tours of the farm
house on the set. There’s also a gift shop that sells
    memorabilia.

    Where to camp:  Monticello
    Jellystone Park
    , Blue
    Inn Campground
    , Whitetail
    Bluff Camp & Resort

    2. Super Museum   |
    Metropolis, Ill.

Anyone who loves all things Superman will find plenty to enjoy in
this museum located in the Man of Steel’s hometown of Metropolis, Ill. It
showcases over 70,000 items of memorabilia, including toys, promotional
materials and movie props, including one of the only George Reeves Superman
    costumes still in existence.

    Where to camp:  Tween
the Lakes RV Park and Campground

    3. The Thing
    |
    Benson, Ariz.

If you’re driving between Tucson and El Paso on I-10, you can’t
miss the blue and yellow billboards advertising The Thing. We can’t tell you
what The Thing is, but we can tell you that this kind of peculiar yet fun
museum manages to combine dinosaurs and aliens. There’s a gift shop,
    too!

    Where to camp:  Butterfield
    RV Resort
    , Valley
    Vista

    4. Winchester Mystery
    House
       |
    San Jose, Calif.

This 24,000 square-foot mansion was built by the heiress to the
Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. It has 160 rooms, 2,000 doors and 10,000
windows, and visitors are drawn to solve the mystery of why she built this
beautiful yet bizarre mansion. One theory was that she was afraid of being
haunted by the ghosts of those who were felled by the “Gun that Won the
West.” (FYI, paranormal activity has been reported here.) Tickets are
available for daily estate tours and there’s a “Summer Séance Series” in
    July.

    Where to camp:  Santa
    Cruz Ranch RV Resort
    , Alameda
    County Fairgrounds RV Park
    , Morgan
    Hill RV Resort & Campground
    , Santa
    Vida RV Park

    5. Dinosaur Kingdom
    II
       |
    Natural Bridge, Va.

This attraction, located about 40 miles north of Roanoke, is not
your typical theme park. Its wild concept is based on the Yankees trying to
use live dinosaurs as weapons of mass destruction against the South. But, as
the park’s website says, “ole Dixie has more than a few tricks still left up
her sleeve.” As you walk through this wooded adventure land, you’ll see
sights like Abe Lincoln lassoing a pteranodon that chewed up the Gettysburg
    address!

    Where to camp:  Yogi
Bear’s Jellystone Park at Natural Bridge
    , Natural
    Bridge/Lexington KOA
    , Lynchburg
    NW/Blue Ridge Parkway KOA
