Camp Cooking: Food on a
Stick
Happy Camper Blog
You already
know how fun it is to roast marshmallows or hot dogs on a stick over the
fire. So why not take it to the next level? Check out these creative eats
that you’ll love making over your next
campfire!
Fruit
Kabobs
Looking for a healthy snack that kids and
adults alike will actually want to eat? Cut up fruit can be basic and boring,
so amp up the flavor and fun factors by roasting it a
fire.
Simply stack a stick with slices of your favorite
fruits and slowly turn just until parts of the fruit become caramelized.
Bananas, pineapples and peaches are particularly scrumptious for this
recipe.
Make it into a light and easy breakfast by adding the
fire-roasted fruit to your favorite vanilla
yogurt.
Prosciutto and
Mozzarella
Get a little gourmet with this recipe
that’s great as either a snack or part of a light dinner when served with a
salad.
You’ll need to buy some fresh mozzarella (the kind
that comes in containers with liquid). Look for ciliegine, or mozzarella
that’s already formed into small, bite-sized balls. Then when you’re ready to
cook, simple wrap a piece of prosciutto around a ball of mozzarella and
thread onto a stick. Add 1-2 cherry tomatoes, then repeat until the stick is
about halfway covered. Roast over the fire while turning slowly until the
tomatoes and prosciutto get a bit of color on
them.
Cinnamon
Buns
Yup! You can make this sweet breakfast treat on a
stick using refrigerated cinnamon buns in a tube from the
store.
Separate buns and stretch each until they’re long
and skinny. Then, without overlapping, wrap each around a stick. Cook over
hot coals (not flames) so that the inside cooks through without burning the
outside. Serve the icing on the side as a dip and
enjoy!
Turkey, Apple
& Brie Melts
Up your sandwich game with these
indulgent and addictive melts.
Thinly cut one apple and one
wedge of brie. Split open a baguette and spread dijon mustard on both sides.
Layer brie slices, turkey, and apple slices on the bottom of the
baguette. Replace the top of the baguette and cut into 2 inch pieces. Thread
one sandwich piece onto a skewer and roast until the cheese is melted and
break is toasted.
