Stay in a what?? Unique Campground
Accommodations
Happy Camper Blog
As you plan
your next camping trip, why not change things up a bit and find a totally
different kind of place to stay? You’ll be amazed by the unique
accommodations you can find at campgrounds across the country. Here are a few
fun picks for you to consider.
Inhabit a
Hobbit House
Rohrersville, MD
The author J.R.R. Tolkien once famously said, “Not all those who
wander are lost,” and if you’re a fan of his work, you just may want to book
a stay at the Hobbit House at The Treehouse Camp – Maple Tree Campground.
You’ll enjoy wandering around on the campground’s 20 wooded acres that back
up to the Appalachian Trail, and the house is everything you’d expect. It has
a rounded door (of course), wildflowers sprouting from the roof, a thatch-covered
porch decorated with solar fairy lights, a wood stove for heating and
cooking, a mural of an enchanted forest and a hand-made harvest
table.

Camp in a Covered Wagon
Santa Barbara, CA
Have you ever wondered what life was like for America’s settlers
who traveled out west in covered wagons? Now you can experience a bit of that
lifestyle yourself. Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in Santa Barbara
rents a covered wagon that sleeps four on cots. It even has a fire pit and
BBQ area so you can cook outdoors just like those early settlers
did.
Try a Teepee
Ludington, MI
The term teepee (or tipi) comes from the Lakota word for
“dwelling,” and your kids will love dwelling in one of these traditional
conical structures. Vacation Station RV Resort’s teepee is built on a wood
deck and is equipped with one queen bed, two twin beds, a table with benches
and a dresser. There’s also a fire ring to provide the ideal spot for telling
tales around the campfire.
Catch a Caboose
Stanardsville, VA
If you’re a railroad buff, what could be more fun than staying in
a caboose? Heavenly Acres Campground’s renovated cabooses come in two sizes.
One of these repurposed train cars sleeps four and the other sleeps two, and
they each come with a fully-equipped kitchen and bath. Be sure to book early
because the availability of these fun accommodations is
limited!
Aspire to an Airstream
Watsonville, CA
For a truly vintage experience, try camping in an Airstream, one
of those iconic rounded trailers made of polished aluminum. The heated and
air-conditioned model available for rent at the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay KOA
sleeps up to four and includes a partial kitchen with dinette, full bath with
shower, TV, patio with patio furniture and a fire ring and gas
BBQ.
Delight in a Double Decker
Narvon, PA
Double Decker buses aren’t just for sightseeing — at Lake-In-Wood
Resort, they’re for camping, too! The campground’s big green bus sleeps two
adults and two kids and includes air-conditioned sleeping quarters on the
second floor, a sitting area with table, small refrigerator, microwave,
toaster and TV. There’s even a chandelier! The outside area includes a gas
grill, covered dining area, picnic table and fire ring.
Yearn for a Yurt
Pine Mountain, GA
Yurts, which are circular tents supported by a latticework
structure, date back thousands of years when they were used by nomads as they
crossed the steppes of Central Asia. Today, they are decidedly more
comfortable, and the climate-controlled yurts available for rent at Pine
Mountain RV Resort’s “Yurt Village” include many comforts of home, like wood
floors, windows, comfortable beds with fresh linens, and even a skylight. The
yurts come in 16′, 20′ and 24′ sizes which sleep four, six and eight or more
guests respectively, and each yurt has a deck, picnic table and fire
ring.
